Emperor Haile Selassie

Born Tafari, Haile Selassie is one of the most iconic figures of the twentieth century, who ruled Ethiopia for nearly six decades, from 1916-1974. This biography documents the life of a man who was able to abolish slavery, introduce constitutional reform and expand educational opportunity in Ethiopia after a number of struggles, which included being exiled in England for five years. Selassie was also instrumental in the founding of the Organization of African Unity in 1963, but he fell short of the ultimate goal of a promised democracy in Ethiopia. Despite all odds, Selassie managed to play a pivotal role towards the movement of Ethiopia's independence.

Emperor Haile Selassieis a readable, well-organised book that accurately portrays the life of the Ethiopian King of Kings and, through him, the history of the nation. The author is at his best in relating his personal experience and ties to the Emperor -- original material that I found fascinating.
